Youth in Ukraine granted right to influence local budgets and community development

During the forum «Youth — the basis of human capital and the revival of Ukraine», the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on the Organization of State Power, Local Self-Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning, Olena Shulyak, announced that Ukrainian youth aged 14 and older have been given the opportunity to participate in addressing local issues.

«The parliament recently supported bill No. 7283 on participatory democracy at the community level, which allows residents of communities aged 14 and older to participate in local decision-making. Now they have the right to initiate and participate in: local initiatives, public hearings, public consultations, advisory bodies, etc.,» she noted.

In particular, youth can be active participants in all processes in their communities, including planning reconstruction processes. After the war, Ukrainian youth will be able to choose projects for funding from the State Fund for Regional Development.

«Youth will have all the instruments of democracy that adults have. This is a great opportunity for them to participate in preparing projects for decisions that will be voted on during sessions,» explained Shulyak.

After the end of the war, youth will be more actively involved in choosing projects for funding from the State Fund for Regional Development. Additionally, youth will be involved in discussing strategic planning documents for regional development.

«Youth are one of the most active users of the Diia platform, so their participation in development projects will be even more real. Not all deputies liked this amendment, but we were able to implement it,» emphasized Shulyak.
