US Senate to vote on bill for Ukraine aid and national security

The Majority Leader in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, has stated that next week the Senate will vote on an additional bill regarding aid to Ukraine and national security, which includes a bipartisan agreement on border and immigration restrictions.

Agreement Text to Be Published Soon

It is planned that the agreement’s text will be published on Friday or Sunday. Schumer intends to hold a vote on the bill next week, no later than Wednesday, Politico reports.

«This will give Senate members enough time to familiarize themselves with the bill before the vote,» Schumer noted.

Republicans Push for Changes in Border Policy

Republicans have demanded that changes in border policy be tied to an additional agreement in exchange for further assistance to Ukraine.

The package includes aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, as well as funding for border security and additional resources to implement the new policy outlined in the bill.

Negotiations on these changes in border policy dragged on, and the bill’s text was delayed for several months. Recently, key players in the deal negotiations stated that they are waiting for an assessment from the Senate Appropriations Committee on the cost of these policy changes. Many members emphasized that they need time to review and discuss the bill’s text after it is published.

The lead negotiator from the Republican party, Senator James Lankford (Republican from Oklahoma), said on Thursday that «there are those asking for three days, and those asking for three weeks.»
