Ukrhydroenergo plans to start construction of the Kaniv HPP in 2025

The CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, Igor Syrota, Plans Construction of Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant

The CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, Igor Syrota, has announced plans to start the construction of the Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Cherkasy region in 2025 in an interview with Forbes magazine.

«We are collaborating with investors, the government of Canada, as well as with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank on the Kaniv HPP project. Due to the current situation, we are revising the project design, considering the experience of South Korea, where stations are located under concrete for protection from missile strikes,» he said.

The planned capacity of the station will be 1000 MW, with the total project cost estimated at $1.5-2 billion.

«We plan to start construction next year,» he concluded.

Kaniv HPP Project Details

The Kaniv HPP involves the use of two reservoirs — upper and lower. During excess electricity production, water will be pumped into the upper reservoir, and during peak loads, it will be supplied to the hydro units for electricity generation.

The project includes four hydro units with a capacity of 250 MW each.

Preparatory work and project documentation for the Kaniv HPP began back in 1984. In 1987, a project for a 3600 MW station was approved, but with Ukraine’s independence, construction was postponed, and in 2006-2007 it was reduced to the current 1000 MW.

Despite the high air temperature, Ukraine’s hydroelectric power plants continue to operate in normal mode.

The Ukrainian government increased the electricity tariff from June 1, 2024, to 4.32 UAH/kW∙hour regardless of consumption volume to restore the energy generation damaged by Russian shelling, as reported by the Ministry of Energy.
