The official representative of the USA and its allies have announced the termination of the Russian bot farm operation, which consisted of nearly 1000 accounts on the X platform, spreading disinformation and pro-Russian sentiments. According to the US Department of Justice, this scheme was created by the digital media department of the Russian state-controlled media outlet RT back in 2022 with funding from the Russian Federal Security Service.
As part of the cybersecurity recommendations issued by the FBI and other agencies, the use of the «Meliorator» tool, which was used to create authentic social media profiles, generate text messages, and spread disinformation, has been discontinued.
Two domains used to register email accounts on the X platform have been confiscated by the authorities. The Department of Justice continues to search for all 968 accounts that were used to spread false information.
Many of the bot profiles posed as Americans, using American names and listing various locations in the USA on their profiles. The bots used artificial intelligence to add disinformation to the network. This bot farm intended to expand to other platforms using the «Meliorator» software.
Earlier this year, OpenAI reported the elimination of several operations of hidden influence from countries such as Russia and China, which used artificial intelligence to influence political outcomes.
This Russian bot farm planned to use artificial intelligence to spread disinformation and influence geopolitical narratives, particularly in Ukraine. The FBI is calling for joint operations to combat the most dangerous threats and to stop the use of advanced technologies for manipulation purposes.
