Record pork export from Ukraine: $700 thousand in June

Imports and Exports of Pork in June 2024

Imports of pork (HS code 0203) in June of this year amounted to 195 tons, with an average customs value of $2.27 per kilogram (-0.3 dollars compared to May prices). This information was reported by the association «Ukrainian Swine Breeders».

Pork exports in June increased by 1.5 times, reaching nearly 296 tons worth approximately 700 thousand dollars. The entire year 2024 has been unusual for pork external trade, as the difference between imports and exports has significantly decreased. For January-June, import volumes totaled 1.63 thousand tons, which is three times less than the same period in 2023, while exports decreased by only a quarter, to 1.2 thousand tons, exceeding last year’s figures.

The decrease in domestic prices in the first half of the year naturally influenced the situation: lower domestic prices complicate pork imports and, at the same time, strengthen the competitiveness of Ukrainian products in international markets, according to the association.

Despite the difference in export and import volumes, there is some parallel observed: the geography of supplies in both directions is limited, industry analysts emphasize.

«All pork import shipments in June came from Canada, while Ukrainian pork was sent to the market of the United Arab Emirates. By the results of the first half of 2024, 66% of imported pork came from Canada, and 9 out of 10 kilograms of exported pork ended up in the UAE market,» clarified the association.
