Poltava region: Decrease in accidents, but increase in fatalities and accidents involving cyclists

Road Safety Statistics in the Poltava Region

From the beginning of January to April 2024, there have been 242 road traffic accidents (RTAs) recorded in the Poltava region, a decrease of 1.1% compared to last year. Unfortunately, the number of fatalities has increased by 10%, with 33 people losing their lives and 309 others sustaining injuries. Of great concern is the 92% increase in RTAs involving cyclists.

Causes of Accidents and Prevention Efforts

Exceeding safe speeds, violations of maneuvering and intersection rules, and driving under the influence of alcohol are among the main causes of RTAs with casualties, as noted by Captain Bohdan Dyachuk of the Poltava region patrol police. Additionally, there have been 17 accidents involving children, resulting in two tragic deaths. Police Major Bohdan Meleshko stresses the importance of parental supervision during leisure time and adherence to traffic rules, especially during school holidays, along with the use of reflective elements on clothing and bicycles in low light conditions.

Improving Road Safety Measures

In April, a joint inspection by the patrol police, road municipal services, and the railway highlighted violations in road maintenance, road sign installations, and road markings. To enhance road safety, 16 photo and video recording cameras have been installed to monitor traffic violations in the region.
