Starting from July 1, 2024, important changes to the special law «On assistance to citizens of Ukraine» will come into force in Poland. One of the key amendments provides for the possibility of obtaining a special CUKR residence card for a period of up to 3 years for Ukrainians with the PESEL UKR status.
How Ukrainians can now legally reside in Poland:
The first way is to obtain a PESEL UKR number, which entitles to temporary residence, official employment, medical care, and education.
The second way is to obtain a residence card based on studying, employment, or business.
The new amendment introduces a third way — the possibility of obtaining a special CUKR residence card for 3 years. These cards provide the same rights as regular residence cards, but they are only available to Ukrainian citizens with PESEL UKR, including children.
Key points to know about the CUKR residence cards:
— Ukrainian citizens with PESEL UKR can apply for these cards.
— PESEL UKR must be valid at the time of application and continuously last for 365 days.
— Holders of CUKR residence cards are entitled to medical insurance at their own expense, not free medical services.
It is also important to update documents confirming PESEL UKR to avoid future issues with benefits and other social services.
Holders of CUKR residence cards can leave Poland for up to 6 months without losing their status.
