Controversies Surrounding the Future of Vilnius Literary Museums

In mid-May, the Vilnius City Council decided to review the fate of three apartments that have become museums of famous Lithuanian writers.

They planned to transfer these objects from municipal management to a state institution, which caused outrage among the cultural community.

According to the head of the city’s Department of Culture, Tadas Rimdzius, the city council announced its intention to change the operating regime of these museums, restricting access only to literary communities and residents.

The Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage, Vidmantas Bezaras, expressed outrage at this decision, believing that the museums have important memorial value and should remain open to the general public.

The Ministry of Culture of Lithuania also emphasized the importance of preserving the museums, creating a petition for their conservation, which has already garnered support from scientists, writers, and students.

Vice Mayor of Vilnius Simona Belyune stated that the municipal administration made a communication error and the decision regarding the museums has not yet been made. She assured the public that the future of the museums will be decided by experts, not politicians.
