Poroshenko Fund appeals to the mayor of Lviv: restoration of the Shukhevych Museum required

Open letter to the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi.

On March 5, Ukrainians will commemorate the memory of the Commander-in-Chief of the UPA — Roman Shukhevych, who on this day fought his last battle against the NKVD troops in the village of Belohorshcha near Lviv.

It is regrettable that the commemoration will take place against the backdrop of the destroyed house-museum of the Commander-in-Chief, which was cruelly destroyed as a result of a missile attack by Russian invaders on January 1, 2024.

The day after the destruction of the house-museum of the Commander-in-Chief of the UPA, the Poroshenko Foundation proposed to finance the restoration of the museum and presented a bank guarantee of 4 million hryvnias. The idea of the prompt restoration of the house, which was a silent witness to Roman Shukhevych’s final battle, was supported at a public meeting on January 17, 2024, in Lviv, with the participation of Roman Shukhevych’s daughter — Maria Trilevska, the chairman of the Brotherhood of the OUN and public figure Miroslav Marinovich, a representative of the Lviv Regional State Administration, and members of the Ukrainian parliament and the Lviv regional and city councils.

The decision on the necessity of restoring the museum, according to its design in March 1950, was also supported by the Lviv Regional Organization of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine. The Lviv City Council also supported the same position by addressing the mayor regarding the acceleration of the museum’s restoration.

On February 6, at the 21st extraordinary session of the Lviv Regional Council, deputies adopted a decision «On the restoration, preservation, and development of the museum of the general and standard-bearer of the UPA Roman Shukhevych.» According to the decision, the museum should be restored to its original state, and the Lviv Regional Military Administration, together with the Lviv Regional and City Councils, are tasked with taking measures to preserve the exhibits.
