Nariman Dzhelal: Stayed Strong in Russian Captivity to Support Comrades

Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Nariman Dzhelal Shared His Experience of Captivity

Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Nariman Dzhelal shared his impressions of his time in a Russian prison after being released. In an interview with the «Rada» TV channel, he noted that even in difficult conditions of captivity, he did not lose hope and supported his comrades.

«I believed that I would be released, because for a person who has ended up behind bars illegally, losing hope is almost like death. Psychologically. I did not allow myself and the guys who were near me to give up,» Dzhelal said.

He also expressed his gratitude to all Ukrainians who supported him in captivity, and informed that he has already reached out to the relatives of his fellow inmates so that they do not lose hope for their release.

Dzhelal described how he found out about his release: «I was working in the prison when they came to me and told me to pack my things. Then they took me out of the prison facility, and the next day they informed me about my release and return to Ukraine.»

According to him, he was then taken to Krasnoyarsk SIZO, where he awaited the exchange. «It was a long road to freedom, which began on the morning of June 27,» added Dzhelal, describing the obstacles and difficulties that had to be overcome.

Dzhelal also noted that during his captivity, psychological pressure was applied to him, but he successfully dealt with these trials thanks to the support of people.

He currently feels well, but plans to undergo medical examinations and has some health issues.

Nariman Dzhelal called for the liberation of Crimea from occupation: «I would really like for this war that started with Crimea to end with Crimea, for Crimea to be free. Many people there are waiting for this and have hope.»
